Acura is Honda engineering with more equipment and a higher service bill at the dealer. We service the MDX, RDX, TLX, ILX, Integra, TL, TSX, RL and ZDX, drawing on the same technicians who work on Hondas every day because the J-series V6, the transmissions and most of the chassis are shared.
The work that defines Acura service is the J35 V6: timing belt intervals that genuinely matter, and Variable Cylinder Management that fouls plugs and consumes oil. Beyond that, Acura ownership in Phoenix is mostly about staying ahead of the heat-related wear that affects every vehicle in this market.
Models we service: MDX, RDX, TLX, ILX, Integra, TL, TSX, RL and ZDX.
Timing belt service on a J-series V6 is not optional maintenance and it is not something to stretch. These are interference engines if the belt fails, the valves and pistons meet. Heat shortens the life of the belt, the tensioner and the water pump driven alongside it, which is why we recommend doing the belt, tensioner and water pump together rather than separately.
Interval | What we perform |
30,000 miles | Full synthetic oil and filter, tire rotation, brake inspection, cabin and engine air filters, AC performance test, battery and charging system test |
60,000 miles | Transmission fluid service, spark plugs, brake fluid flush, coolant condition check, four-wheel alignment, valve adjustment inspection |
90,000 miles | Timing belt, tensioner and water pump on J-series V6 engines, full coolant flush, rear differential fluid on SH-AWD, fuel system service, full suspension inspection |
Oil disappearing between changes and a misfire on the rear cylinders, most often on MDX, TL and RL models. Variable Cylinder Management deactivates cylinders that then draw oil past the rings and foul their plugs. Regular plug service manages the symptom. Where consumption is significant, we test to establish whether more is needed rather than guessing.
No symptom at all until there is a catastrophic one. J-series V6 engines are interference designs, and a failed belt destroys valves. The belt drives the water pump, so both should be replaced together along with the tensioner and idlers. In Phoenix heat, we advise against extending the interval to save a few thousand miles.
Clunky low-speed shifts, hesitation, or a delay into gear on ZF 9-speed models. Some of this is calibration and some is fluid condition, which heat degrades. A proper fluid service and a check for updated software resolves a meaningful share of the complaints we see before anyone opens a transmission.
A groan or whine when turning at low speed, worse on a cold start, on TL, TSX and older MDX models with hydraulic steering. Seals and hoses dry out and crack in desert heat. An annual power steering fluid inspection is a small item that catches this before the assist fails.
SH-AWD Acuras distribute torque across the rear axle, which makes even tire wear more important than on a conventional front-drive car. Mismatched tread depths add strain to the rear differential unit. We measure all four, align four corners on our own rack, and advise honestly on whether you need a pair or a full set.

On J-series V6 engines, at the interval in your maintenance schedule and in Phoenix heat we do not advise stretching it. These are interference engines, so a failed belt causes serious internal damage. We replace the belt, tensioner, idlers and water pump together.
MDX, RDX, TLX, ILX, Integra, TL, TSX, RL and ZDX, including SH-AWD models.
Variable Cylinder Management shuts down cylinders, allowing oil past the rings and fouling the plugs on that bank. It is a known characteristic. Regular plug service helps; if consumption is severe we test to determine whether anything further is required.
Generally yes, and the work carries a NAPA AutoCare 24-month / 24,000-mile nationwide warranty. We use quality parts and provide a written estimate before anything begins.
