Dodge owners in Phoenix tend to fall into two camps: performance cars that get driven hard, and family haulers that never stop. We service both Charger, Challenger, Durango, Journey, Grand Caravan, Dart and Avenger at our shop on North Central, with ASE-certified technicians who know the Hemi V8 and Pentastar V6 platforms in detail.
The defining Dodge repair in this market is the Hemi lifter and camshaft failure associated with the MDS cylinder deactivation system. It is common, it is expensive if ignored, and it is largely a function of oil condition which puts it squarely in the category of failures Phoenix heat makes worse and consistent maintenance makes rarer.
Models we service: Charger, Challenger, Durango, Journey, Grand Caravan, Dart and Avenger.
A 5.7L Hemi in a Charger or Durango running 110-degree summers works its oil harder than the same engine in a mild climate. The MDS lifters that enable cylinder deactivation depend on clean oil at proper pressure, and the well-known Hemi tick is what happens when that condition is not met. Shortening the oil interval is genuinely preventive here, not upselling.
Interval | What we perform |
30,000 miles | Full synthetic oil and filter, tire rotation, brake inspection, cabin and engine air filters, cooling system pressure test, battery and charging system test |
60,000 miles | Transmission fluid service on the 8-speed, spark plugs (16 on Hemi V8s), brake fluid flush, coolant condition check, four-wheel alignment |
90,000 miles | Full coolant flush, water pump and thermostat inspection, differential fluid, serpentine belt and tensioner, fuel system cleaning, full suspension and steering inspection |
A distinct tapping from the top of the engine that does not quiet as it warms up, sometimes with a misfire code. The MDS lifters used for cylinder deactivation collapse, and a collapsed lifter grinds the camshaft lobe under it. This is the single most common serious Dodge repair we see, and the difference between catching it early and catching it late is thousands of dollars.
Oil seeping into the engine valley and down the back of the block, often smelled before it is seen, on Charger, Challenger V6 and Durango models. The plastic housing warps under repeated heat cycling. In Phoenix it fails earlier than the national average, and the updated replacement housing is the only repair worth paying for.
Clunky low-speed shifts, a shudder at light throttle, or a delayed engagement into drive. The ZF-based 8-speed is a good transmission with fluid that does not tolerate heat indefinitely. Phoenix driving and any towing shorten fluid life considerably, and a proper fluid service resolves a surprising number of complaints people assume are mechanical failures.
A no-start, a fuel pump that will not prime, wipers or horn operating on their own, or several odd electrical symptoms at once. The Totally Integrated Power Module is the culprit on many older Dodges. The job is diagnostic proving which circuits the module has lost before anyone spends money on a module.
Charger and Challenger owners running staggered wheel setups cannot rotate tires front to back, which makes alignment the only real defense against uneven wear on an expensive rear set. We measure all four corners and correct alignment on our own rack, and we will tell you honestly if worn bushings or a bent component is the underlying cause.

A ticking from the top of the engine that persists once warm usually means an MDS lifter is failing. Yes, it is worth acting on quickly a collapsed lifter can damage the camshaft, which turns a serious repair into a much more expensive one.
They meaningfully reduce the risk. The MDS system depends on clean oil at correct pressure. In Phoenix heat we recommend full synthetic every 5,000 miles on Hemi engines rather than waiting for the oil life monitor.
