Subaru owners in Phoenix are usually people who drive somewhere on the weekend Flagstaff, Sedona, the rim, a trailhead. That kind of use is exactly what a Subaru is built for, and it also means the all-wheel drive system, cooling system and tires all matter more than they would on a car that never leaves the Valley. We service the Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, Impreza, Legacy, Ascent, WRX, BRZ and Solterra.
Subaru’s horizontally opposed engine layout is part of what makes the car handle the way it does, and it is also responsible for the brand’s two best-known issues: head gaskets on the older EJ engines and oil consumption on the FB series. Both are well understood, and both are far cheaper to catch on an inspection than on the side of the I-17.
Models we service: Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, Impreza, Legacy, Ascent, WRX, BRZ and Solterra.
There is one thing every Subaru owner needs to know that most tire shops will not tell you: Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive requires all four tires to be closely matched in circumference. Replacing only one or two tires, or running mismatched tread depths, puts continuous strain on the center differential and can damage the transfer clutch. We measure all four before recommending anything.
Interval | What we perform |
30,000 miles | Full synthetic oil and filter, tire rotation with tread depth measurement on all four, brake inspection, cabin and engine air filters, cooling system pressure test |
60,000 miles | CVT fluid service, spark plugs, brake fluid flush, coolant condition check, front and rear differential fluid, four-wheel alignment |
90,000 miles | Full coolant flush, water pump and thermostat inspection, timing chain and guide assessment, head gasket inspection on EJ engines, fuel system service, full suspension inspection |
Overheating, coolant loss with no visible leak, bubbling in the overflow tank, or a sweet smell after shutdown on older Outback, Forester, Legacy and Impreza models. The EJ25 head gasket issue is the brand’s most documented failure, and Phoenix heat accelerates the deterioration that leads to it. A block test confirms combustion gases in the coolant, which is how we separate a head gasket from a simpler cooling fault before quoting.
Low oil warnings between changes on newer Forester, Outback, Crosstrek and Impreza models. Piston ring design allows oil past the rings, and heat increases the rate. Monthly dipstick checks are essential on these engines. Running one low is the fastest route to bearing damage on an engine that would otherwise last a long time.
Shuddering, hesitation, or a whining noise that changes with speed. Subaru’s TR580 CVT is more robust than some, but it still depends on fluid that heat degrades. Phoenix stop-and-go driving is the hard case. Fluid service on a real schedule – not the extended interval – is what keeps these transmissions healthy.
Cooling performance that fades over a summer, or air cold at highway speed and warm at idle. Subaru condensers are vulnerable to road debris and the system runs constantly here. Leak detection first, always – a recharge on a leaking system is a temporary purchase.
This is the section Subaru owners should read twice. Symmetrical all-wheel drive needs all four tires within a small tolerance of each other in circumference. If one tire is damaged beyond repair and the others have meaningful wear, replacing a single tire can damage the drivetrain. Depending on the difference, the right answer is four new tires or shaving a new tire to match. We measure before advising, and we will tell you if you genuinely do not need all four.

Often, yes. Symmetrical all-wheel drive requires closely matched tire circumference, and mismatched tread depth strains the center differential. We measure all four and tell you honestly whether you need four, or whether shaving a single new tire to match is an option.

Coolant loss without a visible leak, overheating, bubbling in the overflow tank or a sweet smell are the signs. A block test detects combustion gases in the coolant and confirms it. We test before quoting, because several simpler cooling problems produce similar symptoms.
FB-series engines have a documented oil consumption tendency that Arizona heat increases. Check the level monthly. If consumption is severe we can test to determine whether rings, valve stem seals or the PCV system are responsible.
